You've probably noticed that platforms in the Meta world like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are often experiencing outages or unusual bugs, and it's not a coincidence. Your first instinct is to check your Wi-Fi, but we promise you it's most likely not your connection. And you aren’t alone in experiencing this.
In May, about 8,000 critical employees were let go while reassigning 6,000-7,000 employees to do AI training tasks like data labeling. This transition hasn't been a smooth one, as Meta is experiencing a lot of backlash from the reassigned employees, expressing their deep discontent of what they describe as "mundane work", and hitting its lowest point in Meta's history for employee morale.
So why does this matter? Because of this major shift in Meta prioritizing AI, it's leaving fewer employees to address outages on their social platforms, like this big one from a few weeks ago. All of these current internal issues, unfortunately, are reflecting on their services.
So what can you do? First, if you ever encounter these bugs, you should take a second, reload your screen, and if it doesn't work after the third time, it's ok to come back later. Make sure you're also checking sites like downdetector to see if anyone else has been reporting any issues, as that can be a helpful resource meant for everyone.
But this is a great opportunity to redirect your concern and realize, there are other ways to keep in touch with your followers in times like these. Sometimes, social media isn't as reliable as one thinks, and having it as your only point of contact isn't enough. So, make sure to diversify your contact points like using text messaging or building that email list, and start that website you’ve dreamt about.
